My partner’s grandfather was a wharfie but his dad isn’t so switched on about historical things. When I first met him I had to be dropped at the Waterside Worker’s Hall for a rehearsal with Maude for a Vitals show and he had been told that I was a performer – and then he dropped me here and then he went home and rang my partner’s sister and said “I think she must be some kind of stripper” because he thought this was some kind of functioning strip joint. He thought that was coming here as some kind of entertainer. And then my partner’s sister rang him and said “Are you going out with a stripper?” His Dad thought that the hall was some kind of “men’s club” for working men.
